Do you need to register for HST? The $30,000 rule

If you sell goods or services in Canada, HST registration isn’t optional once your business grows past a certain size. The rule most small businesses need to know is the $30,000 small supplier threshold.

How the threshold works

Add up your taxable sales over the last four consecutive calendar quarters — not the calendar year. If that rolling total passes $30,000, you’re no longer a small supplier. The same applies if you pass $30,000 in a single quarter. From that point you must register for an HST number, charge HST on your sales (13% in Ontario), and file HST returns.

Registering before you have to

You can also register voluntarily before reaching the threshold. Many businesses do, because registered businesses can claim input tax credits — the HST they pay on business purchases comes back to them. The trade-off is the paperwork: charging, tracking, and filing.

The safest habit is simple: keep a running four-quarter total of your sales, so the threshold never catches you by surprise.
